Jordan Spieth was given a stern talking to by caddie Michael Greller during another disappointing round at The Masters on Friday. The 31-year-old, who won the coveted Green Jacket in 2015, sits two over par heading into the third round following a one-over 73 at Augusta National.Spieth currently trails leader Justin Rose by ten shots with the American’s hopes of a first major since 2017 seeming an almost impossibility.
And his frustration was there for all to see on the 18th hole, with Greller quick to snap back. His tee shot veered off and clipped a tree, with the Dallas native finding himself on the edge of the fairway.Facing over 210 yards to get on the green, Spieth gave up any hope of being able to save par with his view slightly cut off by overhanging trees.
Cameras heard him telling Greller on broadcast: “At this point, four is out the window. It’s not happening. I’m so frustrated.”
Quick to try and get Spieth, who he has caddied for the last 14 years, out of his defeatist attitude, Greller said: “Alright, well get over it.
“You gotta get over it.”
Though Spieth was still left bitterly disheartened, as he replied by saying, “That’s a full f****** shot,’ before letting out a huge grunt. Many have joked Greller has the toughest job in golf, trying to keep one of the game’s wildest players under control.Their interactions often go viral – as Greller’s attempts to be the voice of reason fall on deaf ears.As it turned out, Spieth’s fears came true as he ended making a bogey-five on the final hole.
Spieth chose the conservative route and laid up for an approach onto the green with his third shot, before two-putting.
Despite the bogey, Spieth narrowly made the cut to make it to the weekend’s action. He will be paired up with Joaquin Niemann, who also sits on two-over alongside Spieth.Prior to the first round at The Masters, Spieth expressed his shock over the speedy conditions of the fairways, with the course revered across the globe. The three-time major winner stated: “I think I’m pleasantly surprised and pretty shocked at how the fairways are.”
Having failed to make the cut last year at Augusta, Spieth will be looking to climb up the leaderboard as he targets a seventh top-five finish.Having finished in the top three in three out of his first four Masters appearances, he also finished joint third and fourth in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
