Anew wave of talent is taking has taken over the LPGA Tour. Lydia Ko, 19, has won two consecutive majors, and Ariya Jutanugarn, 20, has won three straight starts. Add Brooke Henderson to that list.
The 18-year-old Canadian has somewhat quietly ascended to No. 4 in the Rolex Rankings, just behind Lexi Thompson, who almost seems old at 21. And on Thursday at the KPMG Women’s PGA, Henderson authored the shot of the day, a 7-iron from 152 yards on the par-3 13th at Sahalee Country Club that found the bottom of the hole.
The best part about the ace? Henderson won a new car. However, after the round, she said she’s giving it to her caddie, older sister Brittany.
“I’ll donate it to my sister,” said Henderson, who shot 67 to grab a two-shot lead after Day 1. “All year I have walked up on the practice rounds and said, ‘see that car, if I get it, it’s yours.’ I didn’t say it this week, but she ends up getting it.”
Aww, that’s sweet. Unfortunately, there isn’t video of the shot, but there is this footage of Henderson plucking her ball out of the hole. She stays pretty calm for an 18-year-old who just did something pretty spectacular.
Brittany seemed a bit more excited.
“I don’t have a car,” she said. “I’m waiting until I actually have the keys … I told her no take backs.”
Looks like she doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.
